Sophomore Select
We are very excited to again offer a special program in 2012 for rising sophomores! This limited enrollment program will be by application only. Students accepted into the program will work closely with instructors BRIAN MCBRIDE of the University of Southern California and NICK FIORI of BRONX SCIENCE to develop foundational debating skills.
Any debater entering their second year in the activity is at a crucial moment in their learning curve. Having conquered the basics, most students are hungry for success at the varsity level. It is essential for students at this stage to receive strong guidance that will help them develop good practice, speaking, and research habits. This program is designed with those needs especially in mind.
Skill and tactical work will be the emphasis, but the lab also aims to ignite student interest in topic research and argument construction. Two of the best coaches from the high school and college debating world, McBride and Fiori will ensure students come away transformed into much, much, better debaters. Both instructors offer a strong background in policy and kritikal approaches to debating. Discussions led by other members of the UTNIF staff on select topics also will be offered.
Applications for the Sophomore Select will be DUE by March 15, 2012. Applicants will receive notice of acceptance by April 1. Application to this program is free. More information on the program and the application process will be forthcoming on the UTNIF website.
Public Forum
We are very happy to offer, for the second year, an outstanding program for debaters in Public Forum.
The first session (June 23-July 30), designed for students at the Novice to Intermediate level will introduce students to the foundations of argument construction, presentation and speaking, tournament preparation, and in round strategy.
The second session (July 1-July 8), designed for students experienced in PF competition and ready to advance to the next level, will finely hone debating skills and work with the unique structure of the PF activity to develop strategic approaches to contest round victory. Students looking for a more rigorous experience are welcome to attend both workshops.
